What is one small thing that makes your day better?
I enjoy seeing people have success. It is great to hear when someone’s hard work has resulted in a great outcome or has contributed to someone’s life in a positive way.
How would your friends describe you?
They would probably describe me as friendly, easy-going, quiet at times, but with a good sense of humor. I am a sports guy, watching or coaching (not much playing anymore), and that I love to quote movies but I can’t remember a song lyric to save my life.
What was your first job?
My first job was working at a hotel in banquets setting up for events. I think the best thing about the job was learning to work with people of varied experiences and backgrounds. It also taught me about accountability, which I have tried to incorporate in all my work. I don’t think I was even old enough to drive, but I was often handed a room diagram and a deadline along with the responsibility to get the setup right and delivered on time. The bad of the job … probably our uniforms, which included tan shirts and brown pants, didn’t exactly scream cool.
What has surprised you most about working for OIA?
When I first began working for OIA, I was surprised at the breadth of our work and the many communities we impacted on a daily basis. Having worked for OIA almost 15 years now, this work is no longer a surprise to me, but I continue to be inspired by our efforts to help people in Virginia, the U.S., and around the world.
What is your super power?
Running the grill at family cookouts would have to be my super power. I like to make barbecue with the smoker, too, an all-day commitment, but mmm does it taste good.
